Skittles - America’s Favourite Sweets

Children and adults alike have always been big fans of Skittles, making them one of the most popular candies available.Believe it or not they were first created around 40 years ago and as the decades have rolled by they have been updated and marketed to make them even more attractive and appealing.

Skittles were first introduced to American shops in 1974.At this time the sweets were based around the then popular M&Ms which existed back then as they do today as candy shells with chocolate centres.Skittles kept their colourful shell but instead of the chocolate centre they were replaced with a fruit chew.  Each candy was stamped with the letter ‘S’ in  the same way they M&M logo was found on each of it’s candies.

The manufacturing of Skittles was first done in England before production was moved to America after they proved to be so popular in the UK.Skittles are one of the products owned by the Mars corporation who are perhaps the largest makers of candy in the world. When Skittles were first manufactured they came in a variery of five different flavours.  These were strawberry, grape, lime, orange and lemon.  More flavours were introduced along with new product lines such as Skittle tropical which included flavours such as mango, orange, peach and pear.  The Skittles range was extended further in 2004 with the addition of Skittles gum.  This range of Skittles kept the candy shell, but this time instead of the fruit chew the centre was replaced with a fruit flavoured bubblegum.  These have evolved along with the M&M brand which have gone on to intriduce such products as M&M peanut butter candies.

It is easy to see why Skittles have become so popular.  They are easy to it, look attractive with their range of colours and are of course delicious.  Skittles have got so popular that they are now sold in over 65 countries worldwide and remains one of the most popular candies in the world.
